The PADI Surface Marker Buoy Diver (SMB)

The PADI Distinctive Speciality of SMB or Surface Marker Buoy is a great addition for every diver to have under their belt.

SMB's are long tubes which you can inflate from underwater or at the surface. As their name suggests, they are designed as a signal device. Both in recreation and for emergencies. You will find almost every dive guide and instructor around the world will all carry one while diving.

As you progress with your diving and visit new and exciting locations this speciality will become even more important. A large amount of dive sites around the world requires a buddy team or even every diver to have an SMB with them. You will also most likely send one up from at the end of most dives!

Let's say you have surfaced slightly away from the boat, up goes the SMB, and soon you will have a little speed boat there to get you back.

To enrol in this course:

  • Participants must be at least 12 years old
  • Must be a PADI Open Water Diver, or higher
  • Before participants take part they must fill out Galaxsea's Application and Medical Forms
  • A high recommendation that the participants have their own reel and SMB

What You Learn

  • Techniques for sending an SMB from underwater and at the surface
  • Swimming techniques with an SMB
  • SMB equipment considerations
  • Environmental and geographical conditions that can affect you at sea when diving.

The Fun Part

The fun part about this course is watching your SMB fly to the surface just after you have sent it up. Also learning about the different environmental conditions around the world!

Your Next Adventure

One of the main reasons we have sent the SMB up is to that our boat can see where we have surfaced. Maybe we were carried by a current? So ask us about the PADI Drift diving course as well!
